Dry shampoo recalls unilever due to high levels of benzene, a known carcinogen.

Unilever United States said in a company announcement published on the Food and Drug Administration website on Friday that the recalled products were all manufactured before October 2021. Dry shampoo from Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TRESemmé, and TIGI, which makes Rockaholic and Bed Head, are among them. A complete list of recalled products is available here.

All of the items in question are aerosol sprays. According to the company’s statement, an internal investigation determined that the benzene was caused by the propellant.

According to the company, “Unilever has worked with its propellant suppliers to address this issue.”

On October 17, Unilever announced the recall its website
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, benzene is a chemical that occurs naturally in the environment — it is found in crude oil and gasoline, for example — and it is also used to manufacture some types of lubricants, dyes, detergents, and pesticides. Benzene can also be used to create other chemicals, which are then used to create plastics, resins, and synthetic fibers.

High benzene exposure, whether oral or through the skin, can increase the risk of certain cancers, including leukemia, as well as anemia and other serious blood disorders.
The non-profit Environmental Working Group claims that benzene has caused the recall of other aerosol goods in the past. On that list are several deodorant sprays from Old Spice and Secret that were recalled in November, as well as some hair products from Pantene and Herbal Essences that were recalled in December. Additionally, a recent study discovered that gas stoves in California frequently leak benzene.
