Hero Varun Sandesh is back with yet another concept-oriented movie, interestingly titled Viraji. The film, directed by debutant Adhyanth Harsha and produced by Mahendra Nath Kondla, was released in cinemas today. Check out our review to know how the movie is.

Story:

An unidentified man invites Andy (Varun Sandesh), Prabhakar (Balagam Jayaram), Dr. Sudha (Pramodini), Veda (Kushalini), and others to an old mental hospital situated on top of a hill for an event. Upon reaching there, they all realize that they have been cheated. The person tells them all that he will kill them for their past mistakes and goes about killing them one after the other. Who is this mysterious person? How is the event linked to the person killed by Si Prabhakar? What is Andy’s role in the entire story? You need to watch Viraji on the big screen to unravel the mystery.

Plus Points:

The main plus point of Viraji is its crisp run-time. The movie’s core point, where ten strangers not related to each other meeting together to participate in an event, and the mystery surrounding an identified person who invites them all and kills them one after the other, are the main aspects of Viraji that pique audiences’ curiosity.

Varun Sandesh does justice to the character he portrays. Balagam Jayaram shines in his role. The rest of the supporting actors, including Raghu Karumanchi, Pramodini, Viva Raghava, Ravi Teja, and Kakinada Nani, come up with decent performances.

Minus Points:

While Viraji’s main concept is different and intriguing, the narrative lacks the required thrills that engage audiences from the beginning to the end. Even though the director tries to salvage the second half by incorporating new elements, it doesn’t work out well, and the film fizzles out midway.

The confusion that shrouds the screenplay makes the movie a boring affair. The characterizations of the ten main characters in the movie were poorly written. The narrative often lacks freshness due to certain overdramatic scenes. The writer-director could have come up with a much better screenplay and executed it well to maintain the suspense around the killings.

There is no logic to Andy’s actions in certain scenes. A major portion of the film’s story takes place in a single location, and this comes across as the major drawback of Viraji. A few emotional scenes appear fake and contrived. Varun Sandesh’s getup with a weird hair color fails to impress. The film mostly runs on a dull note.

Technical Aspects:

The film doesn’t score much on the technical front. However, music composer Ebby impresses with his background score in certain crucial scenes. The cinematography and editing could have been better to make Viraji a more riveting crime drama. The production values are just about okay.

Verdict:

Viraji is an underwhelming crime drama that lacks an engaging story and screenplay. The poorly designed characterizations for the main characters and the dull and boring treatment for an otherwise fresh concept-oriented setup are the major drawbacks.
