Ashok Galla’s new movie Devaki Nandana Vasudeva hit the big screens today, generating a lot of buzz, especially since the story is written by Hanu-Man director Prasanth Varma. Let’s dive into the review to see how the film fares.

Story:

Kamsa Raju (Devdatta Nage) is a cruel ruler feared by everyone. During a trip to Kashi, a Shiva sage warns him that his death will come from his sister’s third child. Meanwhile, Kamsa Raju’s sister, Devayani, has a daughter named Satya (Manasa Varanasi). Krishna (Ashok Galla) falls in love with Satya when he meets her at a wedding. After spending 21 years in prison, Kamsa Raju is released. Why did Kamsa Raju spend 21 years in prison? What did Kamsa Raju do to his sister’s daughter? What did Krishna do for Satya’s love? And how did Krishna confront Kamsa Raju? These are the key questions that unfold the story.

Plus Points:

The film, which incorporates a touch of mythology, has a few emotional elements that are decent. Ashok Galla, in the lead role, performs well with his acting, body language, and action sequences. He also impresses in some intense and critical scenes. Heroine Manasa Varanasi shines with her performance, particularly in romantic scenes.

Devdatta Nage, who plays a key role, delivers a commendable performance, doing justice to his character. Devayani, in another significant role, also stands out. Jhansi, as the hero’s mother, fits her role perfectly. Supporting actors like Sanjay Swaroop, Shatru, Sridhar Reddy, Getup Srinu, and others deliver solid performances within their scope.

Minus Points:

While Devaki Nandana Vasudeva has an interesting core concept, the screenplay fails to do justice to it. With such a premise, a gripping and engaging narrative from start to finish was essential. However, the film falters in this aspect. Despite having a mythological touch, the story often feels illogical and overly dramatic.

The melodramatic scenes meant to elevate Ashok’s character feel forced. Portraying superstitions so cinematically in this digital era doesn’t sit well. Devdatta Nage’s character could have been written with more depth and intensity. Stronger conflicts should have been established in the storyline. Even with a mythological base, the narrative fails to generate interest, which is a shortfall on the writer’s part.

The romantic track between the hero and heroine is poorly executed, with unimpressive love scenes and a lack of logic. The action sequences between the hero and villains also lack impact. Overall, the film leaves a sense of boredom in many parts.

Technical Aspects:

On the technical front, the film is decent. Bheems Ceciroleo’s music is a major asset, adding value to the film. Similarly, Prasad Murella’s cinematography is a highlight, capturing visuals beautifully. Editor Tammiraju’s work is apt for the film. However, Prasanth Varma’s writing lacks substance, and Arjun Jandyala’s direction is just average. Producer Somineni Balakrishna’s production values are noteworthy and add richness to the film.

Verdict:

On the whole, Devaki Nandana Vasudeva is a disappointing family emotional drama with a mythological touch. While the film has a decent concept and a few emotional moments, weak characterisations, unengaging storytelling, and an uninspiring treatment hold it back. Although some visual elements are impressive, the film fails to leave a lasting impression. It’s better to explore other options for entertainment this weekend.
